Aesthetic

For this project, we were asked to describe our personal aesthetic that represents our analogies and emblems for the memos described by Calvino.  My examples do not come from a specific theme but instead they are a collection from various works and images I am familiar with. Most of my knowledge and experience comes from my major, journalism.  Calvino created his memo lectures as a sort of guide of indispensible qualities of literature for the new millennium. He knew that literature was moving from printed text to digital, similar to the way journalism is changing.

The millennium was a symbol for the birth of the technology era and I think Calvino wanted to explore what the principles of literature are and how they will translate into a new medium. Through analogy of significant literature works of the past, Calvino explains how these five qualties are timeless and essential. I think the same concept can be applied to journalism. In the midst of newspapers going out of business and the state of journalism in question, staying true to the core qualities or principles of journalism is most important. Regardless of the medium, whether print or online, journlism will survive if it adapts to change but stays true to its qualties.

My emblem that describes my personal aesthetic is the writers notebook. It represents to me what exactly it means to be a journalist and it the most basic and pervasive tool any journalist uses. Even though I have a tape recorder, my computer and video conferenceing, I wouldn’t be able to use them properly if I didn’t know how to conduct a simple face-to-face pen and paper interview. pad
